Jesse Boykins III – Restless Dreamer (Freddie Joachim Remix)
So it’s almost 100 degrees here on a lazy Sunday afternoon, and what better way to kill time than to listen to the latest track from glitch-jazz-beat maestro, Freddie Joachim. His latest little ditty is a remix of the Jesse Boykins III track, Restless Dreamer, and it’s nothing short of classic Freddie.
Both artists have been blowing up recently, with Freddie releasing a stunning EP titled WAITING in early 2012, followed by an even better full-length album titled Fibreglass Kisses in the latter half of the year, through his label – Mellow Orange. The man is no newcomer to the beat scene, having released multiple records over the last 4 years, collaborating with renowned artists such as Aloe Blacc and Blu, and remixing various works by reputable neo-soul legends. Jesse on the other hand is finding success easy to come by this year, with a string of great singles, remixes and shows in 2012, as well as appearing on multiple records this year as a guest vocalist.
The song begins in fifth gear, instantly introducing the drums melted over Jesse’s soulful crooning, with a funky, thick bass line coming in shortly after. The beat is an infectiously catchy, head-bopper, utilising vintage drum sounds layered with warped, warm clavinet keys and synths scattered between each bass hit. It’s a simple remix, working with the same formula the entire way through, forgoing too much progression but it certainly succeeds in showcasing Freddie’s instantly recognisable style and ability to create music suited to seasonal moods (in this case, it felt like a cool breeze on a warm Summer day… Cheesy, but true). The only thing I could really whinge about is the issue of Freddie’s music being so similar at times, making ideas sound quite repetitive and recycled… But this isn’t exactly a bad thing, since I could listen to Freddie all day without an ounce of boredom.
