Warpaint – No Way Out / I’ll Start Believing
Following the band’s premiering of No Way Out (Redux) on Zane Lowe’s BBC One Show in February, Warpaint have now shared a full-length version of the new track, plus another new song called I’ll Start Believing.
No Way Out starts out with that loose, jam-session feel that we heard in droves on the band’s self-titled second album. The delightfully lacklustre guitar-picking (that the LA four-piece do so well) soon gives way to taught repeating vocals and choppy guitars. “I thought I was strong / I guess I was wrong,” Emily Kokal and Theresa Wayman’s sing in unison. For me, No Way Out is an exciting signal of what’s to come from a band that can err too much on the spacey side.
I’ll Start Believing, again, keeps the tempo up. It’s the kind of concise pop song that we don’t hear from Warpaint so much. Amped up and on stage, I can see this being a great addition to the band’s set.
Warpaint play Hammersmith Apollo on 26 March.
