Amidst his 2014 Laneway tour, Trevor Powers aka Youth Lagoon has taken some time to drop his new song, Worms, a track made with real samples from space. Youth Lagoons 2013 release, Wondrous Bughouse, saw a shift from the quiet, nostalgic dream-pop of The Year of Hibernation, to a bolder, bass-heavy, psych-dream pop album which dealt themes of introspection and his imagination. It seems with Worms, Powers truly has left the planet with his four and a half minutes of cosmic psychedelica. The song itself has varied moments, bass loops with Powers’ strong vocals over floating soundscapes transform into heavier celestial instrumentals. The song ends with the lines “we slip away in perfect song. In perfect song”, I don’t think the song could have ended with more appropriate lyrics.

Worms is part of a compilation that Lefse Records is putting together called The Space Project, set to be released on Record Store Day 2014. 14 artists were asked to contribute one track whereby the use samples from the Voyager 1 and 2 space probes somewhere in the composition. These samples are “electromagnetic radiation fluctuations in the magnetosphere of the planets, moons, and large asteroids the Voyager probes traveled near”. The compilation will also feature work for Beach House, The Antlers, and Spiritualized, you can get the full The Space Project track listing HERE.
