Olafur Arnalds – A Stutter (ft. Arnór Dan)

Olafur Arnalds A Stutter

Icelandic multi-instrumentalist and producer Olafur Arnalds is one of those rare artists that makes you shake off the heavy coat of whatever genres you thought you loved to rejoice in the pure simplicity of a beautiful composition of sounds. He makes you accept that your love of cinematics wasn’t purely visual, that your disregard for classical music was ill advised and not without exception, and that you are perhaps after all a subtle romantic.

With this extended version of A Stutter, Arnalds has proven his command of sustained emotion is absolute. Through the thinly concealed recreation of a heart-rate monitor, he connects us to the track by evoking the fragility of life. A Stutter is a song clearly embedded in the snow-drifts of winter. It reflects off the icy lakes of vast Icelandic plains and melts and drips with each touch of the keys. The vocals are not unlike Sufjan Stevens at his most delicate, and if you listen closely you will find the lyrics are as breathtaking as you assumed.

A tease of Olafur’s upcoming album For Now I Am Winter can be found on Soundcloud, but you will have to wait until May 10 for the full release by Mercury Classics.
