TOKiMONSTA – Clean Slate (feat. Gavin Turek)
They say a picture is worth a thousand words, and, surprisingly visuals are more important than you imagine when it comes to consuming music. TOKiMONSTA’s eye gouging cover art for her recent EP, Half Shadows clearly reflects that sentiment. But thats not all. TOKiMONSTA’s music greedily devours all of the senses of her audience, demanding their full attention by offering up a sacrificial smorgasbord of eclectic, eccentric sound.
In an elaborately gorgeous mess of Bass, Indie and Electronica shanked with the influence of Dance Hall, Reggae and Trap, TOKiMONSTA’s music splinters through your mind threatening simultaneous confusion, bewilderment and profound affinity.
Clean Slate is less frenetic and musically crowded than TOKiMONSTA’s other tracks. It oozes the effervescent sass of the upcoming British vocalist Gavin Turek (who by the way, is a girl , just as enigmatic as Lee herself) and is driven by tidy vocals over sweetly, wavering bass.
Behind the TOKiMONSTA moniker is Jennifer Lee, a producer based in LA who attributes her wild card enigma to her ‘lack of focus’. Notably she’s the first female producer to be signed to Flying Lotus’ label, Brainfeeder. She’s touring Australia at the moment and her EP, Half Shadows is downloadable via iTunes.
