Kele & Bobbie Gordon – Bacardi Beginnings
Clever booze brand, Bacardi, have really been nailing the new artist thing with the Bacardi Beginnings series.
AlunaGeorge and Friendly Fires, Bipolar Sunshine and Rudimental, Roses Gabor and Toddla T have all been part of this campaign which pairs rising talent with festival names to produce a track together. Most recently, the young and talented Bobbie Gordon was given the opportunity to work with Kele of Bloc Party; this is the result – Down Boy.
Bobbie Gordon’s soulful but edgy vocals sit on a bed of two-step beats that have a distinctly 90s garage feel to them. That said, Down Boy feels super fresh and when Kele and Gordon performed this for the first time at the Bacardi Party at The Vinyl Factory (under Phonica records), the young crowd were getting so low they were mopping the floor with their hands. No doubt we’ll be hearing much more of Ms Gordon.
Kele says: “Both Bobbie and I love the music from the mid-90s, so we wanted to make something that had a break-beat vibe. Bobbie’s voice is totally unique-sounding; it’s playful and soulful at the same time. She has a very unique quality to her voice but is a versatile singer as well.”
It’s great hearing Kele’s taste in music has changed over the years. After Gordon sang a few more – equally brilliant – tracks, Kele took to the decks and played a heavily bass laden set with a few sexy treats such as Cyril Hahn, which the young crowd went mad over.
I should probably add here that this is first record to be printed in 3d. Yup, that’s really happening.
