Dawn Golden – Discolouration
This isn’t the kind of music I’d associate with Diplo’s label Mad Decent. Not a bleep in sight. (Phew)
Dawn Golden is the melancholic vision of LA based Dexter Tortoriello.. Quite the opposite of the label owner’s tunage, Dawn Golden’s sincere sounds are calming and stress relieving. But more significant is that Discolouration is taken from a debut album Still Life, that comes with a sound so refined it’s hard to believe this is a side project (Tortoriello also fronts Chicago band Houses).
In this frantic world of online music, it’s rare to come across an album of this quality; rarer still to find yourself still listening to the same artist without pressing skip. There’s no rush in Still Life, and it’s not gratuitous either. This is music created with no agenda, no reason other than the necessity for it to exist. The story of Still Life slowly unravels in cinematic slow motion, subtly drawing in listeners with its modesty and overwhelming beauty.
This is powerful music deserves an audience. Download the album here.
