Oohhh lawdy! This song is sexy… Hailing from the serene college town of Ann Arbor, Michigan, producer Atu is a young beatsmith who crafts luscious, expansive and nostalgic soundscapes using old-school R&B samples, jazzy keys and gorgeous bright synths. The man is severely underrated in my books, mainly due to the fact that his music is so heavily layered,  appropriating 90’s era baby-makin’ jams for 21st century schizoid kids by chopping, pitch shifting (yeah that seems to be the norm these days) and layering multiple samples to aural perfection. Just think of Freddie Joachim or Holy Other’s most sensual jams and you’ve got the gist of it.

What You Like is a bass heavy bedroom jam, with a thick, powerful drum groove, tribal textures and an appropriately looped Ginuwine vocal sample.

Shuffling through all the beats on his Soundcloud and his Bandcamp is simply blissful. It’s just a shame that most of his tracks play 3 minutes or under.
